Mixed bag for Sheikh Mohammed at Rosehill

Saturday 1 November 2014, 2:21pm

Expectations were high but the results were mixed after two short-priced Godolphin colts met with varying fortunes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Two-year-old Exosphere started a dominant $1.65 favourite in the opening race after an impressive six-length barrier trial win.

But he couldn't repeat that performance on race day after he was made to work hard early to find the front.

Jockey Glyn Schofield said the colt went too keenly and was in strife a long way out.

He tired to finish seventh to upset winner Single Gaze.

"He got the bit between his teeth and just ran through the bridle with me," Schofield said.

"I knew when we straightened for home he was in trouble."

The disappointment turned to relief 40 minutes later when Mohave scored a confidence-boosting win in the AMWU Handicap, his first since he took out a Blue Diamond Preview in January.

Starting a well-backed $1.80 favourite, Mohave game in-form apprentice Winona Costin her first winner in Sheikh Mohammed's royal blue silks.

"A very big thrill," Costin said.

"I've ridden a couple of theirs a bit ordinary so it was good to get this one home."

Godolphin's assistant trainer Darren Beadman gave Costin some words of encouragement after the race, much to the delight of the young rider.

"Whenever I've ridden for them he'll come and watch the replay with me, he goes right through the whole race and tells me where I went wrong and where I went good. He's fantastic," Costin said.

Meanwhile, the Nick Olive-trained Single Gaze will be set for the Magic Millions Classic after her win in the CFMEU/West Tradies Plate.

Olive had been hoping to start her closer to home in Canberra but a lack of suitable races forced him to come to town in what proved a profitable dilemma.

Friendless in betting, Single Gaze doubled her opening quote to start at $81 and scored a win even jockey Kathy O'Hara rated improbable.

"It doesn't happen often when two-year-olds are off the bridle that they keep finding," O'Hara said.

"To be honest I couldn't see her picking up the leaders where she was. She was a long way from them and not travelling.
