Emirates Stakes an option for Hucklebuck

Saturday 1 November 2014, 1:58pm

Trainer Phillip Stokes is not convinced about stretching Hucklebuck back out to the Emirates Stakes distance but jockey Dom Tourneur would like the gelding to get his chance in the Group One mile.

Hucklebuck made amends for an eye-catching Derby Day defeat in the Carbine Club Stakes 12 months ago with victory in Saturday's Group Three Yellowglen Stakes (1400m).

Connections will consider whether the four-year-old backs up in next Saturday's Emirates Stakes (1600m).

"I think we've had to experiment with his distances and I think 1400-metres is probably as far as he wants at this stage," Stokes said.

However, he will talk to the horse's owner and monitor how Hucklebuck comes through the race before deciding whether to run in the Emirates.

"There's not many other options for him so we'll just see how he pulls up. The back up (into the Emirates) might be an idea but I'll have to have a talk to the owner," Stokes said.

Waiting for a race at the Sandown meeting in two weeks is another option.

Stokes believes Hucklebuck would need a good barrier and be in a strongly run race so he could settle over 1600m.

Hucklebuck ($2.80 fav) positioned just behind the lead before he moved up to hit the front at the 300m mark.

He defeated Alma's Fury by three-quarters of a length with Generalife a short half-head away third.

Tourneur believes Hucklebuck is still on the up.

"Time will tell, is he a miler? Is he a Group One horse? I think we'll get a chance for him to show himself in the Emirates if they choose to go that way," he said.

"If he raced genuinely and switched off from the beginning, I genuinely think he's a miler."
