The Wildman overcomes waywardness to win

Saturday 1 November 2014, 2:32pm

Promising two-year-old The Wildman has lived up to his name with an erratic win which could extend his campaign.

Bookmakers gambled with The Wildman who drifted from $1.90 to $2.30 before beating Patronizing ($6) by a head in the Tiland Constructions Handicap at Doomben.

The Wildman raced greenly at his first start when second at Doomben two weeks ago and his behaviour wasn't much better on Saturday.

He was a handful for jockey Tegan Harrison who finally got him to go straight at the 100m after The Wildman had shied away from a runner to his inside.

Trainer Mick Mair admitted he had been considering spelling The Wildman.

"There isn't much of him so I will see how he picks up. It is pretty hard to spell him when there are races worth $66,000 to the winner around at the moment," Mair said.

"He did plenty wrong and still won. I reckon he will improve with racing."

The Wildman, who is named after the late Sydney trainer Tony Wildman, is the first metropolitan winner for his sire Champions Gallery.

Owner Neville Bell stands Champions Gallery at his Kilto Park Stud and bought the stallion with the view of breeding stayers.
