Brazen Beau wins G1 for Moreira, Waller

Saturday 1 November 2014, 1:48pm

Brazen Beau's first experience of Flemington's straight track was a disappointment to say the least.

His second was a Group One-winning performance in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and testament to Chris Waller's faith in his own training methods.

Waller took Brazen Beau back to Sydney after his fifth in the Danehill Stakes and nurtured him to a win in the Roman Consul.

International superstar Joao Moreira rode him in that Group Two race and was back aboard for Saturday's Coolmore (1200m) which Waller won last year with Zoustar.

"He just wasn't quite ready the first time down the straight," Waller said.

"When things go wrong you need to readjust so we took him home and he had a confidence-boosting win.

"He is a very good colt and always has been and he trialled well down the straight the other day so I knew we had him right and Joao is a big part of this win."

High-profile colt Rich Enuff was the dominant favourite in the field of 16 three-year-olds ahead of Kuro ($6.50).

Speedy filly Eloping ($26) led the 12-horse group on the outside of the track with Rubick heading the four on the inside.

The outside horses had the advantage and Moreira bided his time on Brazen Beau ($8) and exposed him at the 200m and he built towards his big finish.

Brazen Beau had 1-1/4 lengths on his stablemate Delectation who came from near last with Kuro a neck behind him.

Moreira has ridden winners in most racing jurisdictions and said they were all special.

"It's amazing to be here. It's such a great atmosphere," he said.

"He's been a very special horse for me. I won on him last time in Sydney. He brought the best of himself to Melbourne and I'm delighted.

"All the jockeys, we are here today and we are all aiming to be winning one and today's my day."

Unlike Zoustar who came to the 2013 Coolmore with a multi-million dollar stud deal on the table, Brazen Beau has not attracted the attention of breeders.

"Zoustar was a machine and there was a lot of pressure on me and the rest of the stable," Waller said.

"Brazen Beau is the exact opposite. He is the perfect horse. He's well balanced and has a placid nature.

"We haven't had any interest from studs at all. I think we might get some calls tomorrow."

Michael Rodd said Rich Enuff travelled well but had nothing to give when asked at the 400m and finished seventh.

Earthquake was one place behind him and James McDonald was pleased with the filly who was with the inside group which was affected by the strong winds at Flemington.
