Rogerson keen to maintain Sydney stable

Thursday 20 June 2013, 5:15pm

Trans-Tasman trainer Graeme Rogerson has no plans to exit Sydney racing but admits he has scaled down his team.

Rogerson has had just 56 starters this season for five winners, numbers that are well down on his statistics from five years ago when he saddled up more than 1000 runners and led in 107 winners.

Now based primarily in New Zealand where he has a training partnership with his wife Debbie and around 100 gallopers, Rogerson has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a Sydney presence.

"We're not as big as we used to be, sure," Rogerson said.

"We've got 24 boxes. We're only in a small way now but we've got a lot of young horses."

Rogerson appeared to be rebuilding his stable 12 months ago when he announced a surprise training partnership with Hall of Famer Lee Freedman.

But the pair split in December with Freedman subsequently taking up a role with leviathan owner Lloyd Williams.

Rogerson has only had a few city starters since then and he won't be represented at Randwick on Saturday but he will have a runner at Eagle Farm.

Endor, a son of Rogerson's 2005 Victoria Derby runner-up Duelled, will line up in the Group Three Tattersall's Cup (2200m).

But unlike many New Zealanders, Endor doesn't like rain-affected tracks.

He failed to handle Doomben two starts ago when last in the Premier's Cup then bounced back to win a much easier assignment on the Sunshine Coast's cushion track last start

"He wants a good track," Rogerson said.

"We will run him Saturday, then we're running him in the Caloundra Cup and we'll see where we go from there.

"He will make a very good jumper one day."
