Heartbreak City favourite for jumps return

Wednesday 18 January 2017, 1:29pm

Melbourne Cup runner-up Heartbreak City is the early favourite for his return in a handicap hurdle at Leopardstown.

The Tony Martin-trained seven-year-old was just touched off by Almandan in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November having earlier won the Ebor.

Before the Ebor he won over hurdles at the Galway Festival in July.

Officials at Leopardstown report the track to be in good order for this time of year ahead of Sunday's meeting.

"We're in really good shape. We're very hopeful of an excellent day's racing," operations manager David Attwood said.

"We're very excited by the entries. The stand-out horse for us is Heartbreak City, who was runner-up in the Melbourne Cup, going for the Coral.ie Handicap Hurdle.

"We're staying dry for the rest of the week and we're still pinching ourselves this season with the weather.

"The track is in great condition. We've got fresh ground on the hurdles course.

"The temperatures will drop down, but not to freezing, during the week and then it comes back up again towards the end of the week and the weekend and staying very mild. We could see eight to 10 degrees."
