Dunn keen to have big spring carnival

Friday 14 August 2015, 5:12pm

Dwayne Dunn considers last season's Melbourne jockeys' premiership as the one that got away.

But he has already reset his focus on making his mark in the spring carnival.

Dunn finished 2014/15 just three wins away from a first title but had to settle for third behind Damien Oliver and Craig Williams after missing the final two weeks through suspension.

Although the suspension was costly, it was a mid-season slump Dunn said spoiled his chances.

"I had my opportunity to win it and didn't do it," Dunn said.

"But I was really impressed with the season and the things I was able to achieve. You're always learning every day and you want to improve every time you go around.

"Hopefully that develops into a nice clash again later next year.

"I'm just happy to be competitive and I'm working towards the spring now and trying to find the better horses.

"The premiership gets put to the back of your mind now and you've got to look to the big races through the spring."

Dunn will be out to notch his first stakes success of the new season at Caulfield on Saturday on a nine-race program which features three Group races and one Listed race.

Dunn reunites with Petrology in the Group Two P B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) having won a Listed race at Flemington on the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained horse during last year's spring carnival.

He rides Top Me Up in the Vain Stakes (1100m) and unbeaten Adelaide filly Miss Gunpowder in the Quezette Stakes (1100m).

The jockey is down to ride Group One-placed mare Sardaaj in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes but trainer John Hawkes told station RSN on Friday he would recommend to the mare's owners they wait another week because of her outside barrier.
