No Tricks wins Daybreak Lover for Avdulla

It wasn't the telephone call Brenton Avdulla was expecting, but it was one that he was glad to answer after No Tricks won at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

When Avdulla took the call from No Tricks' trainer Wayne Walters, he wasn't sure what to expect.

"I used to take out Wayne's daughter when I was 16 and when he called me during the week I was a bit surprised," Avdulla said.

"He's a great trainer and I knew this filly would be competitive back against her own age."

Walters decided to back up No Tricks ($5.50) in the Daybreak Lover at the Gold Coast after she finished a close fourth to Danchai in last week's Ipswich Cup.

"She definitely knocked up at the finish last week but the run cleaned her right up for this race," Walters said.

"When she arrived from New Zealand the Queensland Oaks was her mission but she didn't have much luck in that race so we decided to push on a bit longer."

Although No Tricks was dropping back from 2150m to 1800m on Saturday, Avdulla said the filly was suited by the fast tempo set by Sambuca Shot.

"She was able to switch off when the tempo was genuine from the outset and the Wayne Walters polish really kicked in the last furlong," Avdulla said.

Jockey Michael Cahill said Bachman, who started a heavily backed favourite at $4, failed to run out the 1800m.

"He switched off better than he did in the Queensland Guineas but he gave ground over the final 200 metres and was a bit disappointing," Cahill said.
