Harlem River bows out with Gold Coast win

Saturday 20 June 2015, 2:13pm

Smart two-year-old filly Harlem River earned herself a spring carnival campaign when she gave trainer Gai Waterhouse a consolation win on Saturday.

Waterhouse, in England to saddle up Wandjina at Royal Ascot, had hoped to win the Group One Tattersall's Tiara with Najoom.

However, Najoom who was second emergency, failed to get a start and left Waterhouse with only two Gold Coast runners.

Sent out favourite, Harlem River ($1.60) was never troubled and led most of the way to beat Star Of Night ($17) by a length in the 150 Years of Tattersall's Stakes.

Stable spokesman Mark Newnham said Harlem River would now spell in Queensland before being brought back for the spring.

"That was painless today and she has done really well in Queensland this winter. She deserves a spring campaign but Gai will decide in which direction she goes," he said.

Harlem River had run second at her first two starts and added to her value with the Listed win.

Coolmore Stud bought Harlem River, who is top sire Fastnet Rock, for $180,000 as a yearling.

Waterhouse has had a mixed winter despite winning the Group One Doomben Cup with Pornichet and several minor stakes races.

Najoom missed the Stradbroke Handicap with a minor injury before missing the cut in the Tiara.
