Gear change works for Shakespearean Lass

Saturday 20 June 2015, 3:14pm

A gear change and a return to racing around a bend has proven a winning formula for three-year-old Shakespearean Lass.

After a maiden win at Cranbourne last month, Shakespearean Lass started favourite in a straight-course race at Flemington but failed.

Trainer Pat Carey opted to apply a visor to Shakespearean Lass for Saturday's Kane Constructions Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley and she lead before kicking strongly turning for home.

Despite laying out in the straight, Shakespearean Lass ($4.80) had 1-1/4 lengths to spare on Cataleya ($12) with Our Harmony ($9) 1-3/4 lengths away third.

"She was terrible down the straight the other day and I value (jockey) Rhys McLeod's assessment on horses," Carey said.

"He just said down the straight she never changed legs and got progressively tired.

"Back to the circle today she was much better. She had a visor on for the first time and I think visors are a beautiful bit of gear - they are a lovely bet each-way. They still allow a horse a bit of vision."

The win was Shakespearean Lass's first in town at her sixth start and it continued a strong season for leading apprentice Patrick Moloney.

It was Moloney's 40th city win this season and he is fourth in the overall Melbourne jockeys' premiership.
