Hawkes Racing makes most of two-state yard

Saturday 20 June 2015, 2:01pm

Mawahibb has become the second Hawkes Racing-trained galloper in 24 hours to win in Victoria after a switch to the leading stable's Melbourne yard due to Sydney's wet weather.

Botany Bay was successful at Pakenham on Friday while Mawahibb was sent out favourite in the Silver Thomas Hanly at Moonee Valley on Saturday and didn't let supporters down.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said more horses would be sent from Sydney to race in Victoria.

"One won yesterday, there's another two racing on Tuesday, three on Thursday and another few will come down in the next couple of days," he said.

Backed from $3.60 into $3.10 favouritism, Mawahibb scored a four-length victory over Demonstrate ($4) with Trinity River ($4.80) 2-1/4 lengths away third.

Hawkes said Mawahibb, a half-brother to 2014 Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, had needed time.

He said the stable rated Mawahibb alongside its quality two-year-olds Headwater and Lake Geneva.

"We had five or six of their calibre and this bloke was one of them but it was a matter of which ones stood up early," Hawkes said.

"He's taken a bit of time and that's why the blinkers were applied to make him focus and get the job done."

Jockey Dwayne Dunn was impressed with the victory, saying the colt would improve.

"His concentration is what lets him down at the moment but the talent is definitely there," Dunn said.
