Thunder Lady could mix it with the boys

Monday 16 February 2015, 5:14pm

If John Sargent is happy with her lead-up gallop, Thunder Lady will take on a stellar field of colts and geldings in the Hobartville Stakes.

The VRC Oaks runner-up is the lone filly among the entries for Saturday's Group Two race at Rosehill which features four Group One winners - Hallowed Crown, Hampton Court, Preferment and Shooting To Win.

"I won't decide until after she works on Tuesday morning whether she runs in the Hobartville or waits another week for the Surround," Sargent said.

"I'm happy so far and if I think she is ready she will go to the Hobartville which is going to be a top race.

"She is a big, loping filly and obviously we won't see the best of her until she gets to the longer distances but she has to start somewhere."

Thunder Lady's program after her first start is the Keith Nolan Classic at Kembla Grange before she tackles the Group One Vinery and Australian Oaks.

Her stablemate Kirramosa went one better than Thunder Lady in the 2013 VRC Oaks but missed last autumn with a leg injury.

Her early spring campaign was interrupted by wet tracks in Sydney and her Cups mission was abandoned after a lacklustre performance in the Caulfield Stakes.

She resumes in Saturday's Group Two Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) and Sargent is exited about her upcoming campaign.

"She is fit and she trialled very well and I'm looking forward to her getting to the big races," he said.

"She is entered for the Queen Elizabeth but it's more likely she will go to the longer races like the BMW and the Sydney Cup."

There were 10 entries taken on Monday for the Millie Fox headed by Catkins, the last-start winner of the Breeders' Classic.

Her trainer Chris Waller will be looking for his fourth consecutive win in the mares' feature having won the past three with the now-retired Red Tracer.

"Catkins has come through the Breeders' Classic in good order. This is a similar race and the set weights and penalties suits her," Waller said.

The Les Bridge-trained Avoid Lightning is also nominated and has been tuned up with two barrier trials, the latest when second to Kirramosa over 1050 metres last week.
