Newitt excited to get back on Lankan Rupee

Monday 16 February 2015, 5:10pm

Craig Newitt has kept tabs on Lankan Rupee's Lightning Stakes build-up from afar and is looking forward to reuniting with Australia's reigning Horse of the Year.

Fresh from his first Singapore Group race win on Sunday, Newitt will fly into Melbourne to ride Lankan Rupee when the world's equal highest-rated sprinter chases a fifth Group One win on at Flemington on Saturday.

Newitt has won three Group Ones on Lankan Rupee and while he respects the likes of Deep Field and Brazen Beau, he said he would not swap Lankan Rupee for any other in the Lightning.

Dale Smith has put Lankan Rupee through his serious pieces of work this preparation including a jump-out win at Caulfield, a trial win at Cranbourne and a raceday gallop during Saturday's CF Orr Stakes meeting.

"I have been speaking to Smithy quite regularly and he hasn't said one bad word about him," Newitt said.

"His trials have looked really good and his exhibition gallop the other day at Caulfield looked outstanding.

"He looks ready to rock and roll."

The Lightning Stakes, renamed the Black Caviar Lightning a couple of years ago in honour of the champion sprinter who won the race three times, has attracted 10 nominations.

Entries have been extended until Tuesday.

Lankan Rupee's rivals include the unbeaten Deep Field and Group One-winning three-year-old Brazen Beau.

Deep Field's jockey Dwayne Dunn has appealed the severity of an eight-meeting suspension, hoping to get at least one meeting shaved off to allow him to ride on Saturday.

The appeal will be heard on Wednesday.

Sydney trainer Joe Pride has nominated Group One winner Tiger Tees, a half-brother to Darley Classic winner Terravista who finished 2014 alongside Lankan Rupee in the world rankings.

Trainer Mick Price has been keen to teach Lankan Rupee to settle a bit more in his races, adamant he wants the gelding's last 400m to be his best.

It's a tactic Newitt believes is the right move.

"I think Mick has got the right plan," Newitt said.

"If it eventuates that we can take a nice sit just in behind the speed, he'll show the good turn of foot that we all know he's got and he looks pretty forward, so he goes to the races in full health and hopefully he gets the right run and can win."
