Newitt to miss Lankan Rupee ride

Sunday 2 November 2014, 7:15pm

An untimely suspension will cost Craig Newitt the ride on star sprinter Lankan Rupee when he takes on European champion Slade Power in the Darley Classic.

Newitt's likely replacement in Saturday's Group One sprint if he lodges an appeal and is unsuccessful is Chad Schofield who won the Newmarket Handicap on Lankan Rupee early in the year.

Newitt was outed for his winning ride on Red Bomber in Sunday's Peninsula Cup at Mornington.

The ban begins after racing at Flemington on Tuesday when Newitt will ride Seismos in the Melbourne Cup.

Stewards found Newitt guilty of mid-range careless riding for letting Red Bomber to shift out on straightening causing interference to other horses.

Newitt has until 5pm on Tuesday to lodge an appeal.
