Emerging Queensland apprentice James Orman had some anxious moments before landing the biggest win of his fledging career on Beau Boy in the Labour Day Cup at Ipswich.

The Cup distance was 2150m but Beau Boy ($4.60) probably covered closer to 2200m on Monday after running off on the first corner.

Orman was going forward on Beau Boy down the straight the first time but went very deep on the sharp turn out of the straight.

"I gave him a dig up and he went whoosh. But he got balanced again and we were able to go forward and take a position," Orman said.

The Gatton-based rider is one of the busiest in the state, riding at more than a dozen tracks last season but this year hopes to get more metropolitan rides.

"I have been going through a bit of a dry spell so it was good to get a feature winner," Orman said.

Beau Boy took his record to six victories for owner-breeder Michael Kelly and trainer Matt Kropp.

An ailing Jim Byrne was stood down from riding after scoring an early double on Vaz De Torres ($2.60) and Jack Be Quick ($3).

He would have felt even sicker when his next ride Kirchner ($2.60) won for replacement rider Ric McMahon.

The gelding was originally trained by Mick Price in Melbourne but was having his second start for Gold Coast trainer Alicia Willick.

The Labour Day meeting has been switched to Ipswich in recent years and is the club's second biggest day outside the Cup.
