Early double to Winona Costin at Randwick

Saturday 6 September 2014, 2:14pm

Fresh from her first stakes victory, apprentice-of-the-moment Winona Costin has made the most of her only two rides at Randwick, winning both.

The 19-year-old won Friday's Listed Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong aboard Bouzy Rouge and backed it up with victory on Foreign Prince and World Wide a day later.

Costin, who made the move from the country to the Gai Waterhouse stable in Sydney a few months ago, has just three wins left to reduce her metropolitan claim to 2kg.

She had little trouble getting the favourite Foreign Prince ($2.60) home in the Early Quaddie (1600m) with the David Payne-trained gelding beating Hunter jack ($3.80) by 1-1/4 lengths.

It was a little less comfortable on World Wide ($6) in the National Jockeys Trust (2000m) with the gelding clipping the heels of Divertire shortly after the start.

But the Bede Murray-trained wet-track specialist gathered himself to get on the pace and draw away in the final stages to put 1-1/2 lengths on Grand Marshall ($5.50).

"He kept finding and I knew he loved the wet track," Costin said.

"It was a big buzz to win my first stakes race and it's great to come here and get a double."

Costin is also looking towards next week, hoping Press Report comes through an injury scare to take her place in the Group One Golden Rose.

The Lee Curtis-trained filly injured a fetlock in training during the week but veterinary examinations revealed no lasting damage.

"I haven't heard any more about how she is. Hopefully she is all right," Costin said.

"I'm very excited about having my first Group One ride although it's a bit nerve wracking."
