Flemington trial for Chiaramonte

Friday 9 August 2013, 4:35pm

Listed winner Chiaramonte will be on trial for some of the better Flemington sprints when he has his first look at the straight course in a restricted event on Saturday.

The Peter Snowden-trained four-year-old rounded out his autumn campaign with an all-the-way Listed win in the Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill and he will be given the chance to go to another level this spring.

He lines up as the equal topweight with 59.5kg in Saturday's Robert Eldridge & Leslie Millson Handicap (1000m) and Darley's Melbourne stable foreman Paul Snowden is keen to see how he handles straight track racing.

"He's probably the best horse in the race and it gives him a look down the straight for later on to see if he does handle it," Snowden said.

"If he wins tomorrow there's some races about a month after that that he can run in that are going to suit him down to the ground."

If successful first-up, races such as the Group Three Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) next month and the Group Two Gilgai Stakes (1200m) later in the spring would come into consideration for the son of Redoute's Choice.

"If he doesn't handle the straight, well we won't go there," Snowden said.

Chiaramonte has won five of his nine starts and arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday having contested two barrier trials in Sydney in recent weeks.

Saturday's race will be his Victorian debut.
