Maskiell backs up for more metro success

Saturday 29 June 2013, 2:47pm

Jason Maskiell's comeback to Melbourne racing continued to gather momentum at Moonee Valley on Saturday with victory aboard three-year-old Impulse Buy.

Maskiell, a former top apprentice in Victoria, scored his first Melbourne win in more than two years last weekend at Flemington and backed it up on the Gordon Richards-trained Impulse Buy who sprinted quickly to take out the Aquanas Foods Handicap (1000m).

The Tasmanian jockey's career in Melbourne was derailed a couple of years ago due to alcohol and discipline issues and a six-month ban for a positive drug test.

He has been riding in Tasmania ahead of an expected return to Victorian racing.

"It's fantastic to be back and it's just good to go back-to-back after the winner last Saturday," Maskiell said.

Impulse Buy ($8) settled three horses back on the fence and sprinted quickly when asked for an effort in the straight.

He burst through over the final 100m to defeat Day Procedure ($6) by a length with a neck to favourite Elite Elle ($3) third.

The aptly-named gelding was bought for just $1000 as an impulse buy at the sales and has now won four of his 20 starts with another 10 placings.

"He's been a good horse for us, even before today," Richards said.

Morphettville-based Richards is considering a race at Caulfield or the Dermody Stakes in Adelaide for the gelding`s next start.
