The Queen embraces golden day at the races

Saturday 22 June 2013, 11:42am

The Queen's bloodstock advisor John Warren hopes the monarch may get more time to spend with her horses when she eventually reduces her Royal commitments.

Photographs of the Queen cheering home Estimate to Ascot Gold Cup glory dominated Friday's newspapers.

Next to her in the Royal Box was Warren, who told BBC Radio 4's Today programme of the Queen's deep knowledge of the sport.

Asked if he feared the Queen would wind down her interest in racing when she eventually takes a step back from public duties, Warren said: "Probably the opposite. I hope the Queen might be able to find a little more time to spend with her horses.

"She has so many commitments that the time she spends with them (horses) is so precious, yesterday was a rare event the Queen gets to enjoy going racing.

"Who knows, one would hope she might get a little more time.

"To wait that long to win a Gold Cup, the excitement was there for all to see, particularly at the end of two and a half miles.

"Racing is a wonderful release for her, to be able to have an alternative thing to think about - it's her tremendous passion and wonderful for British racing that the Queen embraces it wholeheartedly.

"Racing goes through its ups and downs, but to see a wonderful horse and committed owner have success was tremendous."
