Tommy Berry wins Hong Kong Group One

Sunday 27 April 2014, 7:41pm

Tommy Berry has won the QEII Cup in Hong Kong aboard Designs On Rome, beating the horse he rode to victory a year ago.

Designs On Rome wore down his John Moore-trained stablemate Military Attack to win the 2000m Group One feature.

As he did in 2013, Berry flew straight to Hong Kong as soon as the Sydney carnival ended on Sunday to take up a three-month contract.

Things were different this time around with Berry mourning the loss of his twin brother and fellow rider Nathan who died earlier this month from the epilepsy-related condition NORSE syndrome.

Berry admitted it was a hard decision to leave Sydney and parents but said he would continue to ride for both himself at Nathan.

"I believe I'm riding a bit better with my brother riding with me now - it's two for one," Berry said.

Berry rode Designs On Rome to win the Hong Kong Derby in March and said there was much more to come from the four-year-old.

"There was a little bit of a scare when Military Attack got up on the inside," he said.

"He loves a dogfight this horse. I'll be surprised the day he gets beat because he never gives up.

"We haven't found the bottom of this horse yet."
