Kent fears Derby repeat in Australian Oaks

Friday 19 April 2013, 2:54pm

A star New Zealand colt ruined trainer Mick Kent's Derby hopes and he fears a Kiwi filly will do the same in Saturday's Australian Oaks at Randwick.

The Kent-trained Philippi was a well-beaten second in last week's Australian Derby behind It's A Dundeel who scored an effortless win.

Kent saddles up Summerbliss in Saturday's Australian Oaks (2400m) and believes the filly is "in the mix".

However, he is cautious of New Zealand Derby winner Habibi and says she will take plenty of beating.

"I'm pretty happy with her and she's getting to her right trip," Kent said of Summerbliss.

"But the New Zealand filly looks pretty good."

Kent tasted success in the Australian Oaks two years ago when Absolutely powered along the rails in the heavy conditions to break her maiden status in style.

"Absolutely probably had more of a turn of foot. This filly is just a real stayer," Kent said.

Summerbliss broke her maiden on debut in October and two starts later was third in the VRC Oaks behind Dear Demi.

The filly ran seventh in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) last start but didn't have a lot of luck and was carted wide on the home turn.

Hugh Bowman replaces Craig Williams on Summerbliss.
