Schofield and Cummings after more G1s

Friday 13 October 2017, 3:00pm

Whenever jockey Glyn Schofield makes a trip to Melbourne he has a purpose.

Saturday's purpose is trying to add to his Group One tally when he teams with Godolphin and James Cummings at Caulfield following a recent run of success north of the border.

Schofield and Cummings teamed in Melbourne to win last year's Victoria Derby with Prized Icon and Schofield is no stranger to Group One success at Caulfield, guiding Boban to win the 2015 Memsie Stakes.

"It's always nice to come down to Melbourne and ride in the big races," Schofield said.

"James and I have enjoyed success with each other before he joined Godolphin and now that he's joined Godolphin it seems to have continued.

"He prepares his horses so well and it's a pleasure to ride for him."

They combine with Hartnell in Saturday's Caulfield Stakes (2000m) after which a decision will be made whether the gelding runs in next week's Caulfield Cup.

After a first-up win in the P B Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield, Hartnell has since filled placings in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington and the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Schofield is yet to ride Hartnell who will be having his 23rd start in Australia after arriving from England in late 2014.

"James seems quite happy with the way the horse is progressing run to run," Schofield said.

"He hasn't quite been as dominant this preparation as he has been in his other preparations but I suppose it's only a matter of time before he gets another win under his belt and gets on his way."

Schofield will also ride Alizee for Cummings in the Group One Thousand Guineas and is excited about her prospects.

He was aboard the filly when she won the Flight Stakes at Randwick on September 30.

"She's certainly been strong and impressive at her last couple of starts," Schofield said.

"She's one you'd want to ride for sure."

Schofield will also ride the Cummings-trained Sanctioned in the Caulfield Guineas, with the colt on a seven-day back-up from his fourth in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, and Jorda in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.

His remaining Godolphin ride is on Kidmenever for visiting English trainer Charlie Appleby in the Group Two Herbert Power Stakes (2400m).
