Former Canberra sprinter War Jet returns to scene of his biggest win when he races at the Gold Coast.

War Jet hasn't been to the track since he was unplaced in the Magic Millions Sprint in January.

But the gelding did win the 2015 Magic Millions Country Cup there when trained by Joe Cleary.

The gelding won eight races for Cleary who also trained him for an emotional win in Canberra's Tony Campbell Memorial.

Campbell, the former ACT race caller who died in 2006 was a close friend of the Cleary family.

War Jet was sold to clients of Beaudesert trainer Rod Hurley earlier this year and will be having his first start for his fourth stable in Saturday's Open Handicap (1000m).

A former leading apprentice, Hurley has been building up his team with horses such as the consistent Hudson County and has hopes for War Jet.

"He is a seven-year-old now but going along nicely and we hope he races well," Hurley said.

The field for the Open Handicap before scratchings was made up of nine seven-year-olds, an eight-year-old and a nine-year-old with almost 500 starts between them.
