Lord Coconuts to stay at 1600m

Friday 4 August 2017, 6:14pm

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan will delay plans to test talented galloper Lord Coconuts at 2000m and run him over 1615 metres at Doomben.

Lord Coconuts, who did his early racing with Sydney trainer Bjorn Baker, has been a consistent performer since joining Gollan at Eagle Farm in late 2015.

He is by Encosta DeLago out of a Flying Spur mare which indicated he might be a sprinter.

But most of his good form has been around the 1600m mark and he has won six races with the latest at Ipswich over 1666m on June 17.

At his only run since, he was fifth over 1600m to stablemate Sheiswhatsheis at Doomben a month ago.

Gollan has been keen to get Lord Coconuts out to 2000m and entered him for an Open handicap over the distance last Saturday but instead will run him in a Class Six race a week later.

"He has had one go at the Doomben 2000 metres when fourth and he raced OK over 1600 three weeks ago,"

"But I want to keep him at 1600 for a bit longer and while he got more weight in the Class Six it suits him better."

Gollan takes a kid gloves approach with Lord Coconuts who has had a few problems in his career.

The trainer will rely on consistent mares Sheiswhatsheis and Pindan Pearl in the Open Handicap (1615m) while veteran Charlie Boy will line up over 1200 metres.

"We have a few chances on Saturday so hopefully we can start the season with some winners," Gollan said.
