Big Orange in bid for Goodwood hat-trick

Monday 31 July 2017, 6:40am

Popular stayer Big Orange will have up to 15 rivals in his bid for a record third Goodwood Cup.

The two-mile (3200m) race on Tuesday will be run at Group One level for the first time.

Big Orange, unplaced in the past two Melbourne Cups, goes to the race on the back of a memorable victory over Order Of St George in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and is the 10/11 favourite.

Order Of St George will not be among the Goodwood challengers with trainer Aidan O'Brien represented instead by US Army Ranger.

There is a second Irish challenger in Willie Mullins' Wicklow Brave, winner of last year's Irish St Leger.

William Haggas is having a crack at the Gold Cup winner with Dal Harraild but knows the size of the task for the 10/1 second pick.

"Obviously we all petrified of Big Orange but I'm really thrilled with Dal Harraild," Haggas said.

"I'd like the ground to dry as he at his most effective on fast ground. Provided it's not too bad, I think he'll run a really good race."

Ralph Beckett runs both Gold Cup fourth She Is No Lady and 2015 St Leger winner Simple Verse while the James Fanshawe-trained Higher Power, second to Big Orange in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown, goes to the race as the last-start winner of the Northumberland Plate.

Frankie Dettori will ride Big Orange after missing the Gold Cup ride through injury.
