Canberra trainers status decision on hold

Thursday 20 July 2017, 1:31pm

A decision on the status of Canberra trainers will not be made for at least three months.

Racing NSW and the Canberra Racing Club met on Wednesday amid reports the trainers would be classified as provincial rather than country, ruling them out of the popular Highway Handicaps.

The Canberra trainers have an exceptional record in the Saturday metropolitan races for country-trained horses led by Matt Dale who has racked up nine, one less than Murwillumbah's Matt Dunn.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said he and chairman Russell Balding had a productive meeting with the club and agreed to defer any decision.

"The Canberra Club put forward a concise presentation and we agreed to defer any decision for three months," V'landys said.

"That will give the (RNSW) board time to consider the presentation.

"So it's at least three months away."

Earlier this year, Canberra-trained horses competed in the Provincial Championship series rather than the Country Championship with the trainers understanding this would not affect their status in other areas.

The Canberra-trained Maryore won the Provincial final.
