Wynne salutes in tribute to late jockey

Friday 7 July 2017, 4:24pm

Sally Wynne has taken out a tribute race to late jockey Donna Philpot as two Victorian country racecourses prepare for two jockeys' funerals.

The final race at Bendigo on Friday was named in honour of the former Queensland jockey who died at the track on June 27 during a jump-out.

Wynne was aboard $15 chance Winspot as he nudged out Sports Writer and Our Vidia to hand the jockey's trainer-mother Dianne her first win of the year.

All jockeys in the race wore black armbands.

Philpot's funeral on Sunday will come a day before the life of veteran hoop Roger Booth is celebrated at Mornington Racecourse.

Booth's family has asked for donations to the National Jockeys Trust in lieu of flowers.

The 55-year-old collapsed shortly after riding in a race at Darwin's Fannie Bay racecourse on July 1 before having a suspected major heart attack in Darwin Hospital.

The Territory track will mark his death with the running of the Roger Booth Memorial Handicap over 1100m on Saturday.
