Lord Of The Sky wins Cranbourne trial

Monday 3 July 2017, 5:38pm

Comeback sprinter Lord Of The Sky has won a barrier trial at Cranbourne as he builds towards a return to the races.

The Robbie Laing-trained horse has not raced since August last year and is being readied for a return to the races this month after his owners could not reach a suitable stud deal.

The six-year-old won a 760m-trial on the synthetic track at Cranbourne on Monday by four lengths with Damien Oliver aboard.

Laing is planning to kick off Lord Of The Sky's preparation in the Group Three Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday week before he defends the Bletchingly Stakes.

The winner of six of his 25 starts, Lord Of The Sky has contested the past three Sir John Monash Stakes.

He won the weight-for-age sprint by 4-1/2 lengths in 2014 before finishing seventh and fourth respectively in the past two editions.

The sprinter has twice been runner-up at Group One level including the 2015 TJ Smith Stakes which was Chautauqua's first of three consecutive wins in the rich sprint at Randwick.

Lord Of The Sky's other Group One second was in the 2015 Goodwood won by Flamberge.
