Epsom Derby runner makes first-up impact

Wednesday 27 March 2013, 6:08pm

A horse that finished down the track in last year's Epsom Derby in England has added his name to the list of imported winners for trainer Chris Waller with a victory at Sandown on Wednesday.

Waller, who won last Saturday's Group One Ranvet Stakes in Sydney with import Foreteller, unveiled four-year-old Rugged Cross in the Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1300m) and he defeated stablemate High On Believing by a half length.

Sydney's premier trainer has recently taken over 10 boxes at Flemington to also have a presence in Melbourne.

Rugged Cross won one of five starts in England and was placed twice in Listed grade.

He finished eighth of nine in last year's Group One Derby won by Camelot.

"He's not very big but he's a lovely horse," jockey Glen Boss said after Wednesday's win.

Waller's Melbourne stable representative Justine Hales said the turn of speed the son of Cape Cross has would help him in Australian racing.

"He's a little horse but he's got a lot of speed for an English horse," Hales said.

"He's got a turn of foot and that's going to help him."
