Generalissimo outmanoeuvres Classic rivals

Saturday 8 April 2017, 1:33pm

Garry White originally planned for Generalissimo to contest the Provincial Championships final at Randwick.

But was happy to settle for winning the $150,000 South Pacific Classic on Saturday after Generalissimo finally found a favourable track.

"That's the best track we've had in the last couple of starts," White said.

"I wanted to get him to 1400 on a reasonable track to see how he'd go, so it's great."

Blake Shinn made his move on Generalissimo ($15) at the 300m and the three-year-old hit the front and held off Rosa Carolina ($8) by a short head.

Siren's Fury ($17) was a half length away in third.

Generalissimo's fourth career win compensated for failing to fire on his home track last March when he finished seventh in the Provincial Championships qualifier.

"We did (target the Provincial Championships final) but he's only a three-year-old and when we got blown off course at Hawkesbury we had to reset our goals.

"His first two runs coming into this prep were probably the strongest form lines in this race.

"And then he lost his way a bit the last couple because of the tracks," White said.

Providing Generalissimo comes through his Randwick win in sound order, the gelding will have the sixth and final race of this preparation in the $200,000 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on April 29.

"When he comes back I reckon he'll make a good mile horse," White said.
