Kobayashi records impressive Caulfield win

Saturday 8 April 2017, 1:36pm

The colours carried to success in a Group One race in Sydney during the autumn carnival have taken the honours in a two-year-old race at Caulfield.

Saturday's Wellington RC Handicap winner Kobayashi is raced by a number of the owners of last month's Vinery Stakes winner Montoya's Secret with both prepared by father-and-son trainers Leon and Troy Corstens.

"The colours have won us a Group One so we're very proud of them," Corstens senior said.

Ridden by apprentice Ben Thompson, Kobayashi ($8) defeated the heavily backed $2.15 favourite Plutocracy by 2-1/4 lengths with Banish ($4.20) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Kobayashi wore blinkers on Saturday with Corstens instructing Thompson not to lead on the on the son of I Am Invincible.

However the colt began quickly and resented being restrained.

"He jumped so well and after a couple of furlongs I was thinking let him slide," Corstens said.

"Ben did a great job and was rewarded as he's done a lot of work on this horse."

Kobayashi has shown Corstens on the training track he's up to winning at stakes level, but for the moment the trainer will play a waiting game.

"It's hard to make decisions race day, so we'll see how he comes through the race and then we'll have a talk with Troy and see what we do," Corstens said.

Montoya's Secret was forced out of Saturday's Australian Oaks at Randwick after giving a hind leg a knock and Corstens said the filly was spelling and would be back for a spring campaign.
