Corey Brown back in town with Sydney win

Saturday 28 January 2017, 4:41pm

Corey Brown has made the perfect return to Sydney racing, scoring a win aboard Royal Navy at his first meeting since moving back from Singapore.

After more than 3-1/2 years riding in Singapore, Brown moved back so his daughters could finish school in Sydney.

The 40-year-old made all the right moves on Royal Navy who came from midfield off a hot tempo to extend to a 1-1/2 length win in Saturday's benchmark handicap for three-year-olds over 1400m at Rosehill.

"The support I've been offered so far has been a little bit overwhelming and to get the monkey off the back is even better," Brown said.

Brown had to think quickly to avoid injury in the aftermath as Royal Navy reared in the winner's stall forcing him to jump off.

Royal Navy was backed from $14 to $8.50 before the race.

The Pharoah ($12) finish second while Echo Effect ($5) was tough to run third after leading during the race.

Royal Navy's co-trainer Peter Snowden said he was delighted to continue his association with Brown, who rode Souza to victory in the 2008 Spring Champion Stakes, Snowden's first Group One win for Sheikh Mohammed in his previous role as Darley Australia triainer.

"He's a very, very good rider," Snowden said.

"It's a big asset to have a lightweight rider back here and jockey of his calibre."

Snowden, who now trains publicly alongside his son Paul, will make an ambitious tilt at the Group Three Spring Stakes (1600m) on February 11 with the race moved to Randwick because of track renovations at Newcastle.

"Definitely a mile and maybe 2000 metres will suit him best," Snowden said.
