Canterbury stopover for Miss Wonderland

Thursday 29 December 2016, 4:26pm

The performance of Miss Wonderland at Canterbury will determine what race she tackles at the rich Magic Millions race day.

The Melbourne-trained filly is making a stopover en route to the Gold Coast to contest the New Year's Eve Handicap (1250m) on Saturday.

Trainer Ciaron Maher has the option to run Miss Wonderland in the Magic Millions Guineas or the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares on January 14.

At this stage Maher favours bypassing other three-year-olds, Winning Rupert and Global Glamour, in the Guineas race to concentrate on the fillies and mares contest.

But he said he will be guided by Miss Wonderland's performance on Saturday in which she will carry 59.5kg.

Miss Wonderland has raced on three occasions and is coming off a last-start win over 1100m at Flemington on December 17.

"She does have a bit of weight but I do think she's come on," Maher told RSN927.

"She went into the Flemington race fairly soft.

"I think she may be able to land in the one-one position but it certainly won't be any pushover this race

"There's a couple of horses in there that have won their last two starts.

"It's a progressive race."

After one run in the spring, Maher elected to give Miss Wonderland a short break with a view to the Magic Millions.

He said the break did the filly a world of good and she brightened up in the coat.

"We took her nice and fresh into that race down the straight at Flemington," Maher said.

"She should really come on from that so hopefully up at Canterbury she can get another win on her way up to the Magic Millions.

Miss Wonderland sits on the third line of betting for Saturday's race at $5 with My True Love the market leader at $3.80 ahead of Improvement at $4.60.
