Frankel colt tops NZ sale, heads to Sydney

Tuesday 26 January 2016, 6:47am

A colt by unbeaten champion Frankel has made top price at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale.

Consigned by Pencarrow Stud, the colt fetched $NZ1.3 million ($A1.21 million) and was knocked down to a syndicate of influential world thoroughbred figures including the British Bloodstock Association Ireland's Adrian Nicoll.

"It's an international team effort," Nicoll said.

Coolmore, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum as well as French and Hong Kong interests are also involved in the purchase.

"We put a group together as we were not sure we were going to get him one out," Nicoll said.

"He's got the pedigree, got the looks and when I saw him I loved him."

Nicoll said the colt would be trained in Australia, most likely out of a Sydney stable.

The colt hails from the immediate family of Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal and successful stallion Darci Brahma.

"The two best yearlings by Frankel I have seen at auction is this colt and the filly out of Alexander Goldrun that sold for 1.7 million euros in Ireland," Nicoll said.

"He's the best colt we have seen at auction."

Retired to stand at Banstead Manor Stud in England after winning 14 races, Frankel covered several mares in his first season to southern hemisphere time.
