Shakespearean Lass fresh for Valley race

Wednesday 20 January 2016, 11:54am

Trainer Pat Carey has decided on the shorter of two Moonee Valley options for Shakespearean Lass as she attempts a hat-trick of city wins.

Carey nominated the in-form mare for a 1200m fillies and mares race on Saturday's program, as well as a 1000m contest against the males.

The Mornington trainer has opted for the latter as the most suitable target.

Shakespearean Lass scored two wins in fillies and mares grade last month, following a Flemington success over 1000m on December 12 with a dominant on-speed victory at Sandown on December 23.

"We freshened her up after her win at Sandown and have just kept her nice and sharp," Carey said.

"I just thought this race (over 1000m) was probably the best race to take us forward to other races down the track.

"She gets in quite nicely with 55 kilos and we just see it as probably the best way to keep her a bit on the fresh side for races down the track.

"If she runs well here there's a couple of nice mares' races for her coming up."

Shakespearean Lass is no stranger to Moonee Valley having won at the course last winter when she took out a 1200m handicap for three-year-old fillies.

She has drawn barrier 10 in a field of 12 and will be ridden by regular jockey Rhys McLeod.

Shakespearean Lass had a jump-out at Balnarring last week and Carey said McLeod was happy with the mare's work on the course proper at Mornington on Tuesday.

"She's in good order," Carey said.
