Bowman wins at first ride back from Japan

Saturday 16 January 2016, 3:10pm

As if he had never been away, jockey Hugh Bowman has slotted straight back into Sydney racing with a winner at his first ride after a three-month absence.

The reigning premier jockey, Bowman last rode at Randwick on October 7 before heading to Melbourne, where he claimed the Cox Plate on Winx, and then Japan where he rode two Group winners.

Bowman's re-introduction came aboard the Bjorn Baker-trained Selita who led all the way in the Young Farming Champions (1400m) to record her fourth win on end.

"It's good to get back into it," Bowman said.

"She's a pretty straightforward ride."

Bowman restricted himself to riding at 57kg on Saturday, but expects to ride lighter in the near future.

"I expect to be 56kg next week," he said.

"I had two weeks holiday in Ireland and my fitness is not quite there yet.

"I was riding at 55kg in Japan which is light for me so my weight is pretty good.

"I enjoyed my time there and rode some beautiful horses including a beautiful two-year-old Hartley who is probably the best two-year-old I have ridden."
