Good Value scores narrow win at Caulfield

Saturday 19 September 2015, 2:22pm

Injuries have robbed Good Value of an extended racing career, but the veteran showed he has lost none of his fight with a narrow win at Caulfield.

The nine-year-old has spent time sidelined with a fractured knee and fractured pelvis, restricting his career to just 26 starts.

But trainer Mick Kent said he would be looking for a better race than Saturday's Fight Cancer Foundation Handicap.

Ridden by Michael Walker, Good Value ($5.50) scored by a nose from Rugged Cross ($9) with Moonovermanhattan ($5.50) a short head away third.

Kent said there were some upcoming country Cups that may be suitable while a race the gelding won during the Flemington carnival could also be on the agenda.

"I'm hoping he can win a country Cup over the next month or so," Kent said.

"Kilmore or Sale, one of those mile cups, they're worth plenty of money.

"He won at the carnival at Flemington three years ago, so there's races around for him."

Kent said Good Value, who hadn't raced since finishing third over 1800m at Caulfield in July, was a bit "rusty" at his return run.

"He was a bit slow to begin and took a lot of urging to get there," Kent said.

"He's got a big motor and I'm sure there's a good race for him in the spring.

"He's raced well without winning so it's good to see him get there, although I didn't think he had."
