Import impresses with first Australian win

Thursday 17 September 2015, 6:28am

Trainer David Hayes has high hopes for imported galloper Velox who has claimed his first Australian win at Pakenham.

Bought on the recommendation of Francesca Cumani, Velox scored an impressive victory over 1600 metres on Wednesday.

Hayes said the six-year-old would now head to the metropolitan area for a tougher race.

Velox was an expensive buy out of the United Kingdom and Hayes said Cumani would be proven right with Velox who holds a nomination in the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups as well as The Metropolitan and The Epsom in Sydney.

"I'm sure she's going to be dead right with this horse and I think he will be a factor in the spring," Hayes said.

"We'll keep stretching him out conservatively.

"I really feel he's a bit like a Spillway and will come into his best in the autumn and be an Australian Cup horse.

But he's big and healthy and sound and we'll find a race for him in the spring."
