For a horse who has won his past four starts, Japonisme hasn't been feeling the love.

Jockeys are often loathe to jump off a last-start winner but Sydney's form galloper has found himself with a merry-go-round of riders.

Four different jockeys have ridden Japonisme to his quartet of wins and a commitment to stablemate Press Statement has prevented Tye Angland from sticking with Japonisme in the Run To The Rose on Saturday.

Instead, it is Hugh Bowman who reunites with the three-year-old after partnering him to a first-up win at Canterbury last month in a situation Chris Waller says is part and parcel of training a large team.

"It's a big wheel at our joint," Waller said.

"But the jockeys respect that and we respect them as well."

Japonisme's rise has surprised his trainer.

The horse wasn't immediately identified as a stakes class galloper. His has been more of a slow-burn.

But after he backed up three wins over the winter with a dominant San Domenico Stakes performance, Waller had to start making serious plans.

"We get one every six months, a horse that just keeps on improving," Waller said.

"Quite often they've got summer or winter form and they keep improving well enough to take on the better horses due to their fitness and the fact they just keep gaining confidence.

"He just keeps getting better and better and he's running time as well."

Second favourite for next month's $1 million Golden Rose and top pick to take out Saturday's Run To The Rose at Rosehill, Japonisme's toughest opposition could come from his stablemate.

Unbeaten in three starts and a Group One winner, Press Statement will be racing for the first time since the J J Atkins at Doomben in June.

Waller is approaching the colt's first-up assignment with caution after watching a race-fit Japonisme relegate resuming Golden Slipper-winner Vancouver to fourth place in the San Domenico.

But he is also mindful Press Statement has class on his side.

"His first grand final is in two weeks time but it's important to run him on Saturday," he said.

"Fitness will determine where he finishes. He's good enough to win but as we saw with Vancouver, you can never underestimate in-form Sydney horses."

The Run To The Rose has historically been a good form reference for the Golden Rose.

Hallowed Crown (2014), Denman (2009) and Paratroopers (2005) have claimed the double while Dissident, Epaulette, Smart Missile, Helmet and Squamosa have all filled top-three places in both races in the past five years.
