A sense of satisfaction has surrounded the winning return of Amicus in the Group Three Toy Show Quality at Randwick.
The winner of the Group One Thousand Guineas last spring, Amicus failed to come up in five autumn starts but trainer Chris Waller kept the faith.
Amicus ($6) rewarded him in Saturday's 1300m race when she came with a late sprint to overhaul Echo Gal ($4.60) and win by a nose with the favourite Wine Tales ($3.80) another half length away.
"She has come back well and it's good to see her win," Waller said.
"She wasn't beaten far in the Coolmore against the older mares and she is a Group One winner already."
Waller said although her Thousand Guineas win was over 1600m, Amicus was likely to be kept to shorter distances this spring.
"I think a mile really pulls her up," he said.
"We might look at a race like the Sir Rupert Clarke in Melbourne but I don't know if she will go to the Myer Classic."
Her jockey Hugh Bowman, who also rode her to her Group One win, said Amicus showed her true qualities.
"There is no substitute for class," he said.
"We probably didn't see the best of her in the autumn but it is hard for them in the autumn - they've got to take on the older mares.
"She looks to have come back at four and looks in good order."
