Queensland's premier racetrack Eagle Farm will remain closed for racing for another 10 months.

Eagle Farm was closed a year ago for extensive renovations and it had been expected the track would be back in use for the winter carnival last May.

However, after a delay in financial grants from the state government means the last part of the redevelopment won't start until next month and the track will re-open a year later than first hoped.

The delay has had an impact on both TAB and bookmaker turnover as well as crowd numbers. As late as last week some Brisbane Race Club officials were hopeful the track would be ready in late March or early April.

However, BRC Chairman Neville Bell confirmed on Friday the track would not re-open for racing until the beginning of the 2016 winter carnival.

Bell said the BRC was now set to begin a project that would include the construction of two tunnels beneath the track.

"Preliminary works have started. The project is scheduled for completion before next year's Brisbane Racing carnival," Bell said.

"This project follows the redevelopment of the Eagle Farm course proper, which was completed in May."

Trainers have been told that from September 11, Eagle Farm will close for trackwork for two months as work begins on the pedestrian tunnel in the home straight and the vehicular tunnel at the 1000m point of the course proper.

It will re-open in November on a partial circuit and by the end of February trackwork will be expanded to include the full circuit.

"We are already working closely with Eagle Farm trainers to determine the best way to operate trackwork at Doomben so that all horses are catered for," Bell said.

"Doomben cannot cater for as many horses as Eagle Farm during usual trackwork hours so we're discussing all possible solutions for this two-month period."

Queensland's top three trainers - Tony Gollan, Robert Heathcote and Liam Birchley - are all based at Eagle Farm.
