Bullrush to make debut at Goulburn

Sunday 2 August 2015, 5:12pm

The powerful Hawkes Racing team will make a rare trip to the country for the debut of Bullrush at Goulburn.

The New Zealand-bred four-year-old, owned by Gary Chittick of Waikato Stud, steps out in a Class 1 handicap over 1100m on Tuesday.

The son of O'Reilly has created a big impression in his two barrier trial wins in Australia.

Bullrush was never pressured scoring over 893m at Rosehill, his home track, on March 30 and again turned in a similar performance to win a 900m trial at the same track on July 21.

"He's a nice horse going the right way," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

"We gave him plenty of time when he first came over and yes, we could have started him off in Sydney but Goulburn, on a nice big track which he likes, looks a nice starting point for him."

From the same family as Starcraft, Bullrush spent his early days in New Zealand before being sent to Sydney as a three-year-old.

"He'd trialled in New Zealand before coming over," Hawkes said.

"He was given time over there to develop. He's a lovely big horse and was a colt when we first got him.

"We contacted the owners and told them he was starting to get bigger and it would be in his best interests to turn into a racehorse if we gelded him.

"They agreed and it's been the making of him."

Bullrush has continued to please the Hawkes team since his latest trial.

"He's ready to go to the races," Hawkes said.

"He's doing everything right and ticked a lot of boxes.

"Whatever he does on Tuesday we feel confident he'll improve on."
