Listed Wyong Gold Cup in Campania's sights

Saturday 1 August 2015, 2:58pm

More than two years after Campania last raced at stakes level, trainer Garry Frazer has ambitions to step her up in class again.

The mare won out in a four-way finish to claim Saturday's benchmark (1900m) to set up a possible Wyong Gold Cup start.

As a three-year-old, Campania raced at the highest level, finishing midfield in the 2013 Group One Vinery Stud Stakes won by Norzita.

"I thought she might be an Oaks filly when she was younger but she just wasn't strong enough for the 2400 metres and she never got to the race," Frazer said.

"She's a lot stronger now and we will have a look at the Wyong Cup now she's in form."

Campania ($9) overhauled Zayam ($17) to win by a half neck with Artibai ($7.50) another head third and favourite Marenostro ($2.10) close-up fourth.

The Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) in on September 4.
