Rocky King reigns in Sunshine Coast sprint

Saturday 25 July 2015, 4:07pm

Rocky King will dodge the Melbourne spring in favour of the Magic Millions carnival after regaining his crown as the Sunshine Coast's sprint king on Saturday.

Rocky King, who was backed from $4.20 into $3.20, made it six wins from eight starts over the Sunshine Coast 1000-metre circuit with his victory in the Spire Law Open Hcp (1000m).

The gelding had been beaten at his two previous starts but got into the race with only 55.5kg after apprentice Brooke Stower's 3kg claim.

Trainer Tom Bourke took Rocky King to Melbourne last year but the horse wasn't at his best and failed to fire.

"We won't be going to Melbourne but he will have a start at Doomben in two weeks and then spell," Bourke said.

"Rocky King will then be back for the Magic Millions Sprint race at the Gold Coast in January."

Rocky King has won just over $500,000 and will have no problem making the Magic Millions race field.

Stower scored her first Saturday metropolitan win on Rocky King.

"He jumped well today and I was able to lead and dictate the pace," she said.

Meanwhile, Top Tone ($7) scored an poignant win for his connections in the Go Transit Media Group Hcp (1600m).

Top Tone is owned, trained and bred by Lorraine Erhart the wife of former premiership-winning Brisbane jockey Tony Erhart.

"We had Top Tone's mother Gumball Rally and she is also the dam of our city winner Blue Mini," Lorraine Erhart said.

"But she got spooked in a storm when five months in foal and she was badly injured.

"Unfortunately, we had to put her down and lost the foal."

Top Tone posted his fourth win from 11 starts on Saturday and will now be stepped up in distance.
