First Saturday metro double for Quinton

Saturday 25 July 2015, 4:02pm

Ron Quinton has reached great heights in racing but he had never trained a metropolitan Saturday double - until now.

An eight-time premier jockey in Sydney and a Group One winning trainer, Quinton brought three horses to Canterbury and came away with two winners, both ridden by his former apprentice Sam Clipperton.

Let's Make It Rain won the two-year-old sprint and Boss Lane lowered the colours of the favourites in the TAB Rewards Handicap, also over 1250 metres.

So confident was Quinton that he had the pair spot-on, he came to Canterbury rather than accept an invitation to go to the Sunshine Coast to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the track.

"I rode Mr. Omega to win the first race up there 30 years ago and I was invited up there today but I had to come here with these two," Quinton said.

"I've had trebles at a night meeting and at the provincials but I've never had a Saturday double as a trainer.

"Sam and I came here with a plan which was to win both races and it's worked out."

Quinton paid tribute to the Canterbury track, the best wet surface in Sydney.

"Boss Lane has never won on a heavy track except at Canterbury," he said.

"He is by Dubawi and around the world he is not a sire known for wet trackers.

"But the Canterbury track is different from the rest."
