Wet Sunshine Coast query for Love Rocks

Thursday 23 July 2015, 12:17pm

Only heavy rain will derail the long-term plans for the return of classy but injury-troubled sprinter Love Rocks at the Sunshine Coast.

Toowoomba trainer Steve Tregea has targeted Saturday's Spire Law Open (1000m) for Love Rocks for several months.

The track will be rain-affected for Saturday's meeting but Tregea is still keen to run him even though he has never been on a really wet surface.

"If it is a bog we will have to reconsider," Tregea said.

"But I have had this race in mind for him for a while.

"I think the big track at Caloundra will be kinder on his knees that a tight, turning track like Doomben."

Tregea gave Love Rocks a long break after he failed in the Listed Keith Noud Quality (1200m) at Doomben last November.

The gelding has won five of his 14 starts and is rated 100 because of his win in the 2013 Listed Lough Neagh Stakes.

The gelding has been dogged by knee problems throughout his career and has had surgery during his break to clean up the issues.

"The trouble with these horses is when they start to get a bit of work they can feel the pressure," Tregea said.

"But to date in his work he has been going well and doesn't seem to be feeling his knees."

Tregea will make up his mind about a possible interstate trip with Love Rocks after Saturday's race.

Love Rocks had two Sydney starts in late 2013 when briefly transferred to Craig Carmody.

He finished 2-1/2 lengths from subsequent Group One winner Terravista and a half length second to the well-performed Big Money.
