Kiwi Addictive Habit recaptures top form

Saturday 20 June 2015, 3:44pm

Memories of the popular New Zealand galloper Rough Habit came flooding back when Addictive Habit returned to his best form on Saturday.

Addictive Habit ($9), a Group Two winner in New Zealand, had struggled in two runs since coming to Queensland but was at his best in the Southbank Insurance Brokers Handicap.

Addictive Habit is by Columbia out of Chasing The Habit, a half-sister to Rough Habit.

Rough Habit's breeder Isabel Roddick and several other partners in the warhorse, are among Addictive Habit's owners.

Trainer Lee Somervell also had a close association with Rough Habit who won six of his 11 Group One races in Queensland during the 1990s.

"When Rough Habit retired we had him for 14 years at the Cambridge Thoroughbred Lodge," Somervell said.

"He died about the same time Addicted Habit won the Group Two Coupland Mile back home in November last year."

Somervell said it had been a team effort to get Addicted Habit back to his Group-winning form.

"We have had him at (trainer) Bevan Laming's stables and he and his staff have been a great help," he said."

"Also Michael (jockey Cahill) has done a lot of work with him. Michael felt there was something wrong with him in his two failures here and wanted to stick with him.

"Addicted Habit worked very well last Tuesday and we knew he was back near his best."
