Brazen Beau beats stars in G1 Newmarket

Saturday 14 March 2015, 4:12pm

The international racing stage is waiting for Brazen Beau after the colt upstaged the world's top-ranked sprinters in the Newmarket Handicap.

In a $1 million race tipped to go the way of either Lankan Rupee, Terravista or Chautauqua, Brazen Beau will head to Royal Ascot later this year having claimed the most important scalps of his career.

As champion jockey Joao Moreira sent Brazen Beau clear with his lightweight, Terravista and Lankan Rupee, rated the two best sprinters in world racing last year, manage to finish third and sixth respectively.

It was left to Chautauqua ($3.20) to power home late out wide for second but could get no closer than 2-3/4 lengths to the winner.

Trainer Chris Waller said he would let others judge where Brazen Beau should be rated alongside his older rivals but he knows he has a sprinter of the highest order.

"He's beaten a world-class field and he's beaten them with a bit of contempt," Waller said.

"Sure it's a handicap, but he's a three-year-old and he's entitled to have a few kilos off them."

Moreira, the Hong Kong-based superstar who wins wherever he goes, maintained a perfect record on Brazen Beau after winning on the colt in two spring starts including the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

He is a clear leader in the Hong Kong premiership and has also notched his third Group One in Australia this season, all for Waller.

Moreira had Brazen Beau close to the speed early before switching back to the inside with 500m to run.

"With a furlong to go I knew he was going to win the race quite easily," Moreira said.

"He was just attacking the line."

Dwayne Dunn said Chautauqua ran fantastically but lamented letting Brazen Beau get away.

"It was a case of the three big kings just got caught together and we weren't worried about where the winner was," he said.

Terravista, striving to be the first to win first-up in 98 years, pulled up with heat stress.

"He was found out today. He was first-up and he will take improvement," Bowman said.

Lankan Rupee beat Brazen Beau at weight-for-age last start but Mick Price was at a loss to explain the favourite's unplaced run in his attempt at back-to-back wins in the race.

"He was very disappointing," Price said.

"He didn't finish alongside or close enough to Terravista and Chautauqua."
