Suavito adds another Group win in Blamey

Saturday 14 March 2015, 4:02pm

Suavito has continued on her winning way in the Group Two Blamey Stakes but trainer Nigel Blackiston's hopes of targeting the Doncaster Mile will rest on the rate of attrition.

A first-up winner of the Group One Futurity Stakes before adding Saturday's Blamey to her record, Suavito is 42nd in the ballot for the $3 million Doncaster Mile in Sydney on April 4.

Blackiston has hoped to get the mare into the Doncaster, where she has 50kg, but said he may be forced to aim for a different feature during The Championships.

"If we can get into the field, we will definitely head that way. If not, we might stay here for the Sunline Stakes and go up for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes," Blackiston said.

The Sunline Stakes is on March 27 at Moonee Valley.

The Queen Of The Turf Stakes for fillies and mares is another option during The Championships on April 11, the same day as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Suavito was a little slowly away before Damien Oliver decided to roll forward around the field with the speed only moderate and they took up the lead after 500m.

From there Oliver controlled the race on the $2.45 favourite and Suavito kept responding in the straight to defeat Sertorius by a length with 1-1/4 lengths to Kourkam third.

Blackiston admitted it wasn't the plan but praised the decision by Oliver to make the winning move.

"That's why you put D Oliver on," Blackiston said.

"I'm not a fan of leaders but he summed the race up perfectly, got cheap sectionals and kicked away. When they came at her I always knew she would fight.

"She's a good mare."

Suavito has won Group races in her past four starts, two either side of a spell.
