William Buick wins Pago Pago on Tarquin

Saturday 14 March 2015, 3:22pm

Visiting Godolphin jockey William Buick's first win in Australia has come with some cautionary words from stewards at Rosehill.

And his other ride on Saturday has brought him close to a suspension which would have ruled him out of the Dubai World Cup.

Buick rode Tarquin to win the Pago Pago Stakes but in doing so, shortened up Josh Parr's mount Arsonist who was tiring out of the race.

After celebrating Tarquin's win with a little too much water, Buick weighed in from his sixth place on Igraine in the Magic Night Stakes 700g more than when he weighed out and within 100g of a suspension.

"I had a drink between races," Buick said.

Presiding chief steward Marc Van Gestel told the rider he had stretched the rules to the limit.

"You were close to the placegetters and our rules for weight offences start with suspensions," he said.

The drama aside, the England-based Buick, who signed with Sheikh Mohammed's operation late last year, was more than happy with his first Sydney success.

"It is a privilege to be in this position. To be able to ride such good horses all over the world," he said.

"And it was a nice win by Tarquin. He has a bright future."

Buick will be back at Rosehill next Saturday to ride Ottoman in the Golden Slipper.

The filly is one of four horses trainer John O'Shea will send out for Godolphin with the others Furnaces, Exosphere and Haptic.
